Rusanka Lyapova was born in 1966 in Burgas, Bulgaria and attended the English gymnasium there. In 1991, she completed her studies in Serbo-Croatian Language and Literature at the Philosophical Department of Sofia University, and then became a lector of Serbian language at the universities of Associate Professor at the Military Academy, Sofia.

Rusanka Lyapova has also worked as a literary translator from Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian and Macedonian since 1994. She has so far translated prose, lyrics and theatrical dramas, including texts by Miljenko Jergović, Miroslav Krleža, Slobodan Selenić, Jelena Lengold, Vladimir Arsenijević, Milorad Pavić, Svetislav Basara, Mihajlo Pantić, Borislav Pekić, Radoslav Petković, Robert Perišić and Edo Popović.
