A poetic and philosophical story of human fate and its dependence on, or independence from, historical events. The novel tells of Pavel Volkov, a Russian officer of Serbian descent, who is sent to Trieste at the beginning of the 19th century, Pavle Vuković, a Serbian historian, who becomes a witness to the events in Hungary in 1956 and Count Đorđe Branković II (1645-1711), who died in Eger in exile.
