Dubravka Ugrešić was born in 1949 in modern-day Croatia. She studied at the Department of Philosophy at Zagreb University and has worked there for over 20 years at the Institute of Literary Theory. She had to emigrate for political reasons in 1993. She lectured at various European and American universities, and has now made her home in Amsterdam as a freelance author. Dubravka Ugrešić is known for her short stories, novels, and political essays. She regularly writes for NRC Handelsblad, Vrij Nederland, DIE ZEIT and Lettre International, and has been awarded numerous prizes, including the Austrian State Prize for European Literature in 1999, and the Premio Feronio-Città di Fiano in Italy in 2004. Her books have been translated into over 20 languages.
