This book by Wolfgang Schivelbusch is about, probably, the most important innovation of the 19th century: the railway. It not only drove the industrial revolution, but also permanently changed the everyday spaces and political maps. Business and war planners could no longer do without the railway. Since then, space and time are no longer what they were before. This study is a contribution to the history of the process of civilisation in the early phase of industrialisation and mechanisation. The author’s intention is to showcase changes in the psychological constitution of modern man with the introduction of new technical apparatus.
