The story begins in a dusty cellar of a library in the Serbian backwaters and leads the reader through a fantastic labyrinth by way of a fictitious document about an age-old brotherhood. The secretive organisation – a mythical order of bike riders – influences the fate of mankind through their powers to control the future. The bike riders meet in a dream, inside a free-floating transparent cathedral, where they receive orders from the brotherhood’s members from the future. Full of satire and fantasy the author makes a line-up of eccentric figures appear before the reader’s eyes, imagined and historical figures – Charles the Ugly, Freud, Nietzsche and Sherlock Holmes, all the way to Stalin. Basara uses them to question the unity of space and time and to prove the hypothesis that history can never be told objectively.
