All doors stand open to Đuro Andrijašević, but while studying in Vienna he goes astray. He whiles away his days and nights in the cafés of Vienna, wasting his time. In the end, he returns home to make a new start in Zagreb, but his fiancée’s family distrusts him, his mother does not talk to him, and his uncle’s promised inheritance turns out to be a vapid dream. His financial problems only increase. There’s no other way but to take on a job as a teacher in the small Croatian town of Senj, but even this employment does not bring him peace.
