Ibsen’s A Doll’s House and The Pillars of Society form the source material for this very loose updated version. The ‘didactic play in the Brechtian tradition’ begins at the end of A Doll’s House, when she leaves her husband and children and sets off towards a self-determined life. It is set in the 1920s, when German fascism is already on the rise. In a nasty turn of disillusionment, Nora’s attempt at liberation is cut short and ironically ends in dependence again, having to return to her husband. The play is a critical examination of contemporary feminism, which, according to Jelinek, ignores the economic context of emancipation and thus remains apolitical.
