The book was first released in Romania in 1982. In Germany it was first released in 1984. Juxtaposing reality and fantasy, nightmares and dark laughter, Nadirs is a collection of largely autobiographical stories based on Herta Müller’s childhood as part of the German minority in the Romanian Banat region during the time of Communism.
