Herta Müller was born in 1953 in the Romanian town of Nitzkydorf. Between 1973-76 she studied German and Romanian Philology in Timișoara. She arrived in Germany in 1987. From 1989 till 2001 she taught as guest professor at universities in England, the USA, Germany and Switzerland. Since 1995 she is a member of the German Academy for Language and Literature in Darmstadt. Among her most famous works are the novels The Land of Green Plums (1994) and The Hunger Angel (2009). In 2009 she was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.
