Who am I when events and experiences have turned me into someone else? Hans, an esteemed surgeon, returns home from the battlefields of the First World War. Or more precisely, her returns to what he once, before the war, considered his ‘home’. What he has experienced during the war has shattered his certainties, leaving behind only an indelible strangeness. Yet: His wife Grete and his friends recognise him and he does his work reliably and well … only his dog senses and suspects that something is off. Has the war turned Hans into someone else? Or: Is he actually someone else, someone who has quietly slipped into the folds of Hans’ life?
