Holzfällen is the story of an “agitation”, the story of an “artistic evening” in Vienna. The narrator, a writer, sits in the wingback chair and observes the party waiting for the actor of the Burgtheater, who had promised to come to this supper at half past eleven. The actor from the Burgtheater finally appears in the middle of the story. The narrator becomes more and more agitated. He leaves the house, runs into the Inner City of Vienna, this city, which he hates and which, however, is the best city for him, whose people he hates and yet who are the best people for him.
