The narrator of the novel suffers from overgrown empathy: he can and must empathise with everybody and everything and experience everything that others experience – whether this is his grandfather in the beginning of the 20th century, the young Minotaur locked up in a labyrinth, or a snail that is about to be eaten. And the fact that time passes by irretrievably, seems to discomfort him. He invents time capsules: containers in which he puts everything that is important for the present. But what is important? For this purpose, he must make lists, which was a popular game among children and youths in the old Eastern bloc.
