Following its takeover of power in 1944 the Bulgarian communists also wanted to carry into effect a “socialist way of life”: however, in implementing this plan the party and state came up against an unruly population, which didn’t want to live its life in accordance with the ideology’s requirements. With the help of the main sites of the “socialist way of life” the book examines Communist social policy, the results of which have seldom corresponded to intentions, but which have permanently transformed society and culture.
