Who is the author of the mysterious letter that has turned everything upside down? That is what Filip wonders. He lives alone in a cluttered flat and describes himself as a loser in his memoirs. Is the sender a fraudster? Or really a brother who went missing in Argentina and whom Filip never knew about? A meeting at the Brioni Bar is supposed to clear up these questions. But Filip’s old local bar is beyond recognition and soon his own life turns unrecognizable, too. Years earlier, following the deaths of his parents and sister, Filip would get drunk at the bar on countless evenings, surrounded by surly waiters and taciturn companions. But in the completely new atmosphere of the bar, such a past is now unthinkable – all the more so when his supposed brother finally turns up. The Balkans have changed and yet remained alarmingly the same, as the great Serbian novelist David Albahari makes clear with this fantastic encounter between brothers.
