During a lengthy hospital stay, Bernhard deepens his friendship with Paul Wittgenstein, Ludwig Wittgenstein’s nephew, which was first sparked by impassioned discussions on music. In his later years, Wittgenstein grew ever more lonely and recluse. And so, Bernhard’s notes turned into a testament of Paul Wittgenstein’s death. Through the close observation of his friend, Bernhard became more attuned to observing himself, and so a vivid image of the observer himself appears before our eyes, equally transfixing as the precisely drawn portrait of his friend.
