In his latest book, Axel Honneth dissects the multi-facetted idea of “recognition” from various perspectives that have abounded in Europe since the beginning of Modernity. His focus lies on three influential traditions of thought – the French, the British and the German one. Using these, Honneth sets out to show how markedly different the philosophical interpretations and social manifestations of recognition are in these places due to different political and societal factors and challenges.
