The young divorce lawyer Clarin is looking forward to an undisturbed Whitsun weekend in his Tessin holiday home, where he would like to write an essay for a professional journal. On the first evening he gets to know an older, apparently confused man. They talk deep into the night and gradually they tell each other their stories and love stories. The circumstances under which Loos lost his beloved, almost deified, wife were dubious, and this loss made the world seem difficult and hateful to him. Clarin, on the other hand, lives easily and happily. Moreover, two people could not be one another. How close they are to one another only emerges later on.
