Saša Stanišić was born in 1978 in Višegrad in Bosnia and Herzegovina and came with his family in 1992 as a young war refugee to Germany. His debut novel How the Soldier Repairs the Gramophone impressed readers and critics alike and was translated to 30 languages. Before the Feast was on the Spiegel bestseller list and was awarded numerous prizes, including the renowned Alfred Döblin Prize and the Prize of the Leipzig Book Fair 2014. He won the 2019 German Book Prize with his novel Herkunft [Origins]. Saša Stanišić lives and works in Hamburg.
