Robert Alexy, born in Oldenburg in 1945, studied law and philosophy in Göttingen. His dissertation Theorie der juristischen Argumentation (Theory of Legal Argumentation) first went to press in 1978 and was awarded the Prize of the Philological-Historical Class of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences in 1982. From 1978, Robert Alexy worked as an assistant to Ralf Dreier at the Chair of General Legal Theory in Göttingen. He did his postdoctoral thesis in 1984 on the subjects of Public Law and Philosophy of Law. Robert Alexy is a full member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities, a multiple honorary doctor and holder of the Federal Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. In 2013 he received the Science Award of the City of Kiel.
