Friederike Mayröcker was born in Vienna in 1924. After graduating from high school, she took the state examination in English and worked as an English teacher at various Viennese secondary schools between 1946 and 1969. She began her first literary works as early as 1939, followed seven years later by smaller publications of poetry. In 1954 she met Ernst Jandl, with whom she initially became close friends, later becoming his partner. After her first poetry publications in the Viennese avant-garde magazine Plan, she published her first book in 1956. Poetry and prose, stories and radio plays, children’s books and plays followed. Mayröcker died in Vienna in 2021.
