Ekaterina Tarpomanova was born in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, and graduated Balkan Studies at the University of Sofia where she learned the languages of the Balkan Linguistic Union – Albanian, Greek, and Romanian, besides Bulgarian, her mother tongue. She is an associate professor of linguistics at the same university. In her research she focusses on the convergence of the Balkan languages believing that the linguistic similarities are a reflection of deep social and cultural proximity of the Balkan peoples. Her scholarly interests help her in her passion for translating contemporary Balkan authors and popularizing their work in Bulgaria.
