Dubravka Ugrešić
Dubravka Ugrešić was born in 1949 in modern-day Croatia. She studied at the Department of Philosophy at Zagreb University and worked there for over 20 years at the Institute of Literary Theory. She had to emigrate for political reasons in 1993. She lectured at various European and American universities, and made her home in Amsterdam as a freelance author. Dubravka Ugrešić was known for her short stories, novels, and political essays. She regularly wrote for NRC Handelsblad, Vrij Nederland, DIE ZEIT and Lettre International, and was awarded numerous prizes, including the Austrian State Prize for European Literature in 1999 and the Premio Feronio-Città di Fiano in Italy in 2004. Her books have been translated into over 20 languages. Ugrešić passed away on 17 March 2023 in Amsterdam.
