Ahmet Hromadžić was born in 1923 in Bjelaja kod Bosanskog Petrovca in Bosnia and Herzegovina. He published many stories and novels for adults and children alike and also worked as a journalist and literary and theatre critic. His work has been translated into more than 30 languages. Due to his distinct literary voice he is considered the ‘Andersen of the Balkans’ or the ‘Bosnian Tolkien’. Hromadžić established the children and youth literature series ‘Biblioteka Lastavica’ that has published more than 900 books so far. He was a member of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Bosnia and Herzegovina and was honoured with numerous accolades. Ahmet Hromadžić died in Sarajevo in 2003.
