Aleš Šteger’s novel tells the story of a remarkable woman against the backdrop of Yugoslav history. Born in 1923, Zora joins the partisans to oppose Nazism – and it is precisely this fighting spirit that she will have to maintain throughout her life. Whilst Zora struggles with her wartime traumas, with the rejection by her strictly Catholic family, and with the hostility she faces in Slovenia upon her return from Belgrade, she is at the same time a witness to the changes within the communist movement across generations, and repeatedly experiences what upheavals and new beginnings build up, but also what they destroy.
