Nothing is as unstable (or fragile) as masculinity. The history of the last 500 years is full of “New Men”. The European Renaissance redefined man and called him the “New Adam”. The French revolutionaries wrote the slogan “regeneration of man” on their banners in 1789 and created their “New Man”, the “homme régénéré”, which they successfully exported as a model. In the revolts of 1968, the foundations were laid in North America and Europe for the next “New Man” in history. Whether “New Adam” or “Regenerate” or “New Man”, each designation marks the beginning of a comprehensive socio-cultural de- and reconstruction of masculinity.
