Elvira Dones has written an unflinching and insightful novel about the Albanian mafia and the trafficking of women. It makes it very clear that there is nothing here to romanticise. The novel depicts a society overwhelmed by change. It shows dreams that crumble on the sidewalks of Europe, fates whose smallest detail is important, unscrupulous struggles for money that lead to the cruel exploitation of women, to limitless violence, to the annihilation of any sort of ethical or moral compass. And in the midst of it all – small pockets of love and self-empowerment. In Albania the novel sparked a public debate and heated discussions.
