The novel Split, whose title is not only the name of a city in the earlier Yugoslavia, but also the English word for “separation”, deals with the peculiar (in a Croatian review of the book it is called “strange, even pathological” relationship between Serbs and Croats). The hero of the novel is an advertising professional from Belgrade, a ladies’ man, who, in order to get round women, likes to talk about his lost half-brother in Croatian Split. When this half-brother in the end becomes almost an obsession for him, he takes himself off to Croatia to find him …
