Sigurna kuća

„You have murdered your husband.“ With this sentence Marina Vujčić opens her novel Sigurna kuća. Lada Lončar is incarcerated in a prison for women when she realises that this place, surrounded by criminals and murderers, is the “safe house” she was looking for, not the bourgeois marriage of her past, which proved to be a cabinet of horrors. Lada reflects back on her life: As a young woman she thought she would find true happiness with her partner, an esteemed university professor. But at home the charismatic and attentive entertainer turns out to be a fiercely jealous, whiny, and also increasingly aggressive monster. Yet nobody and no one around them wants to acknowledge what is hiding behind the perfect facade. Until a new bout of violence turns lethal and Lada fights back. Now she is both victim and perpetrator.
