When the war broke out in April 1992, Tijan Sila was only ten years old, yet to this day he can still remember the smell of explosives going off. Whilst Sarajevo is ablaze, the boy he once was becomes a young man. He roams through the ruins of the bombed-out city, collecting items left behind by those who have fled or died, to swap them for food on the black market. He learns to survive and comes to terms with the cruel new normal – but at what cost?
His story is one of the unexpected. It tells of how poets become murderers and murderers become heroes. It tells of people from whom all humanity has been abruptly stripped away, and of the shrapnel that war leaves behind in the mind of every survivor.
