Adam is a literature professor at the University of Ljubljana. He is trying his hand at writing a novel: for the first time after his debut failure twenty years ago. Ana is a young ambitious editor, and an informant for the national security service. She receives Adam’s manuscript The Masterpiece for review. Over the course of working together, the two, both married people, embark on an intense love affair. While Adam moves in dissident circles and burns for Slovenian independence, Ana is torn between her personal life ambitions and the pact she made with the dark side of the system. Schnabl’s haunting psychogram is set against the backdrop of the catastrophe Yugoslavia was heading towards after Tito’s death.
