In his four-volume magnum opus, Anniversaries, Uwe Johnson unfolds a unique panorama of German history in the 20th century: from turbulent 1960s New York to the history of a German family in the Weimar Republic. Day by day, over the course of a year, Gesine Cresspahl recounts her ten-year-old daughter Marie their own family history, about life in Mecklenburg during the Weimar Republic, during the Nazi regime, of the subsequent years in the Soviet occupation zone and the first years in the GDR. At the same time, the novel describes the everyday life of mother and daughter in the metropolis that is New York, in 1967/1968, in the midst of the Vietnam War and the student protests.
