The gate is the mouth, the windows the eyes – in little Ana’s imagination the house in the former Johannisgasse in the Transylvanian city of Brașov is given a face as well as its own thoughts and feelings. In her novel, Brașov-native Ioana Pȃrvulescu recounts the lives of the house’s inhabitants and imbues mirthless times with its own patina of bliss and splendour. This novel is her first to appear in German translation.
