Germany at the end of April 1945: Michael Hansen, 25, returns to his country of origin as an American officer and takes on an assignment from the secret service. He is to find out what role an important scientist played in the Nazi regime. While the war is still raging in some pockets of the country, Hansen sets off from Frankfurt to Bavaria and takes up quarters at the Ammersee. In an antiquarian bookshop in Munich he meets an early companion of the eugenicist Professor Ploetz, the dissident Wagner. Wagner tells him the story of a friendship that began in Breslau at the end of the 19th century and that led two students via Zurich all the way to America.
