Geschichte Südosteuropas: Vom frühen Mittelalter bis zur Gegenwart
Konrad Clewing, Oliver Jens Schmitt
Publisher: Friedrich Pustet

The book offers a cross-epochal account of the entire Balkan Peninsula, including its maritime environment and the lands of the Hungarian crown. The focus here is not on the history of individual nation states, but on the presentation of the overall regional context, the significance of which can be explained in terms of the great empires (Byzantium, Habsburg, Ottoman Empire) that dominated this part of Europe for centuries. Social and cultural history is given broad scope; in particular, the ethnic, cultural and religious diversity of the region, which is unique in Europe, and the processes of ethnic homogenisation in the 19th and 20th centuries are examined in detail.
