Leipzig 1968: Historian Dellow is released after 21 months in prison. His crime: Filling in for an absent piano player during a student cabaret. The lyrics, set to a tango tune, caused grave offence. “Best to leave it all behind you,” is the advice he is being given upon getting out. But Dellow does not forget. He grows cynical and indifferent. Even the fact that others openly admit that he has been wronged does not change his obstinate demeanor.
