Not since Byzantine iconoclasm and the iconoclasm of the Reformation have images been thought about with such intensity as in recent decades. In addition to archaeology and art history, numerous other disciplines are debating the issues surrounding the image. In view of this, art historian Horst Bredekamp explores the question of why the concept and validity as well as the power and powerlessness of images have become such pursued topics these days.
