The storyline of this autobiographical novel begins in the 1920s. The nameless narrator, a young man, witnesses how Jewish students are violently expelled from a university. As he is himself Jewish and a student of law, he joins a small group of Jewish students who fight for the possibility to continue their studies. He soon leaves the group, however, not out of fear to be beaten down, but because he is afraid to lose his identity if he identified himself with the group. He doesn’t want to be defined based on his nationality solely.
