Anne Beaumanoir: Born in 1923 in Brittany, raised in humble circumstances, already a member of the communist Résistance as a teenager, rescuer of two Jewish youths (for which she will later receive the honorary title “Righteous Among the Nations” from Yad Vashem), after the war working as a neurophysiologist in Marseille, sentenced to ten years in prison in 1959 for her support of the Algerian independence movement… and still a living example today of the importance of disobedience. The book was awarded the German Book Prize as the best German-language novel of 2020.
