“From my earliest youth I had an ardent desire to travel to distant lands.” Wanderlust, an unquenchable thirst for knowledge, and energy and zest for life that would have been enough for two lifetimes: Alexander von Humboldt was the greatest traveller and most famous scientist of his time. The “true discoverer of America” climbed the highest volcanoes, navigated unknown rivers, explored the flora and fauna of several countries, inspired contemporaries such as Goethe and Darwin and exchanged ideas with the US-American President Thomas Jefferson and the freedom fighter Simón Bolívar.
