Volker Heins, born in 1957, has been Director of the “Interkultur” research unit at the Institute for Cultural Science, Essen, since April 2012. Heins was awarded a Ph.D. in Political Sciences in 1988 at the Goethe University, Frankfurt/Main. This was followed by his postdoctoral lecture qualification in Gießen in 2001. He also lectured and carried out research at colleges in New Delhi, Cambridge (USA), New Haven and Jerusalem, including, finally, several years at the McGill University in Montreal. Since 1998 he has been a member of staff at the Frankfurt Institute for Social Research. Heins has published numerous scientific works on his key aspects of research, the sociology of democracy, the political theory of modernity, international civil and military interventions, and conflicts about human rights, as well as intercultural themes in the history of thought.
