Uwe Timm
Uwe Timm was born in 1940 in Hamburg. After primary school he trained as a furrier and attended the Braunschweigkolleg, an institute for adult education. He graduated from high school in 1963. After that he studied German language and literature and Philosophy in Munich and Paris. 1967/68 he was active in the Socialist German Student Union. In 1971 he was earned his doctor’s degree with a thesis on the problem of absuridity in the works of Camus. 1970-1972 he studied sociology and economy in Munich. Since 1971 he has lived as an independent writer. 1971/72 he founded the Wortgruppe München, and was a co-editor of the journal Literarische Hefte. From 1972-1982 he edited the AutorenEdition, a collective and unhierarchical publishing project that emerged within the Bertelsmann publishing house. Since 1994 he has been a regular member of the German Academy for Language and Poetry, German P.E.N. Center and the Academy of Arts. He lives as an independent author in Munich and Berlin.
