Snežana Bukal was born in 1957 in Belgrade. Already at the age of 17, she received the October Prize of the City of Belgrade for her unpublished book of poems. After graduation she studied comparative literature and literary theory in Belgrade. In 1986, her first book was published, the collection of short stories Tamna strana, for which she received the Federal Prize for the best debut work of the year. Besides writing, Snežana Bukal also translates from English to Serbo-Croatian, among other works also The Wrecker by R.L. Stevenson and two stories from The Dubliners by James Joyce. Snežana Bukal left her home country in 1992. Since then, she has been living in the Netherlands and continues to be a successful writer.
