Norman Manea, born in 1936 in Suceava (Romania), was deported as a child to a concentration camp in the Ukraine and returned to Romania in 1945 with the survivors of his family. He studied at the Technical College and initially worked as a civil hydraulics engineer. In 1966 he published his first story, which was immediately prohibited. In 1974 he began to work as a freelance writer and emigrated in 1986 to New York, where he lectures as Professor for European Studies and Culture at Bard College. Norman Manea has received a series of international awards and is regarded as one of the most translated Romanian writers. His critics have often compared him with Kafka, Joyce and Musil.
