Nelly Sachs, born Leonie Sachs in Berlin in 1891, began writing poetry at the age of 17. In 1940, she managed to emigrate to Sweden with the help of the Swedish writer Selma Lagerlöf. In 1965, she received the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade, and the Nobel Prize in Literature the following year. She died in Stockholm in 1970.
