Miodrag Pavlović, born in 1928 in Novi Sad, was one of the most prominent contemporary Serbian poets. He grew up in Belgrade and studied medicine there. He worked for a short time as a doctor and later as a dramaturge at the Belgrade National Theatre and as an editor at the publishing house Prosveta. In 1952, his first book of poems was published, the legendary 87 pesama [87 Poems] that made him famous as the radical modernist of Yugoslav poetry. In 2003, he and his translator Peter Urban received the Prize of the Town of Münster for European Poetry. Miodrag Pavlović died in August 2014 in Tuttlingen, South Germany.
