Martin Walser, born in 1927 in Wasserburg on Lake Constance, studied literature, history and philosophy at the Universities of Regensburg and Tübingen. He received his doctorate in literature for a thesis on Franz Kafka. For his ample literary oeuvre he received many awards, most notably the Georg Büchner Prize 1981 and the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade 1998. In addition, he received the order “Pour le Mérite” and was named the “Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.”
