Marlen Haushofer was born in 1920 as Marie Helene Frauendorfer in Frauenstein in Upper Austria. She published her first text in 1946. Today, she is considered as one of the forerunners of the modern women’s literature. She received numerous literary prizes, among others the Arthur Schnitzler Prize, as well as the prize for the best children’s book of the city of Vienna and the national prize for literature, which she both won twice. She died in 1970 in Vienna.
