Leo Perutz

Leo Perutz, born in 1882 in Prague, moved to Vienna in 1899 with his family, where he trained as an insurance actuary and attended the university and technical college as a guest student. He published his first stories in 1906 and 1907 in Vienna and Teplitz. In 1915 he was called to the Russian Front, where he received life-threatening injuries. His most productive literary period was the time between 1918 and 1928, in which he published six successful novels. He also wrote stories, novellas and screenplays. One of his most well-known works is the novel, Meister des Jüngsten Tages (title of the English translation: The Master of the Day of Judgement), which was translated into many languages after its publication in 1923.  Leo Perutz emigrated to Tel Aviv in 1938. He died in 1957 in Bad Ischl.
