Joseph Roth

Joseph Roth was born in 1894 in Schwabendorf near Brody in eastern Galicia and died on 27 May 1939 in Paris. Roth was a journalist based mostly in Berlin and Vienna, before he traveled to all European capitals as the correspondent for the Frankfurter Zeitung. In 1930, his book Job earned him his first literary success. Since 1933, he has been step by step emigrating first to Vienna, then to Marseille, Nice, and finally to Paris. He contributed to several publication for emigrants and was an advocate for the restoration of the disintegrated Habsburg multiethnic state. But he couldn’t get up on his feet again, either financially nor personally. In 1939, after many blows of fate and a lifelong history of drinking, Joseph Roth died in a Paris hospital for the poor.
