Iris Hanika was born in 1962 in Würzburg and moved to Berlin in 1979. She studied general and comparative literature in Berlin and she continues to live there. Her first book, titled Katharina oder Die Existenzverpflichtung, was published in 1992, followed by many other publications. Her novel Treffen sich zwei was shortlisted for the German Book Prize in 2008. In 2006, she received the renowned Hans-Fallada-Preis. She reveived the EU Prize for Literature for the novel Das Eigentliche in 2010 and the prize LiteraTourNord in 2011 for the same novel.
